EMPLOYMENT

Having and keeping a job is one of the things in life that help us maintain some or complete independence. This might look different for different people depending on their needs, capabilities, interests, skills, and training. Having skills to do a job is important. These skills can be gained through work experiences; training; or after high school education such as college, vocational, or technical programs.  Even when skills vary by jobs and careers, there usually is a method to teach and learn that is straightforward. The other skills that are critical to on the job success are "soft" skills.  Soft skills are a combination of social, communication, and interpersonal abilities that can be learned, but are more difficult to process and understand for many people.  This is mainly because they are not concrete or "black and white".  These skills involved more complex thought processes that are challenging for many people with disabilities or processing challenges.
